Curious to know what a therapist can do? Here’s my take!
Coaching is the newest wave in what the millennial crowd expects from the field of psychology. Given the demands of the global economy, it only makes sense that young professionals are motivated to seek out the best service providers they can find.
However, while coaching is trendy in the online and social entrepreneur world – with robust terms such as “mindset” and “abundance” – it’s truly somewhat recycled with origins from the fields of psychology and counseling therapy.
Coaching as a new modality styles itself from the many schools of therapy – dating all the way back to Carl Rogers’ “person-centered” theory with his classic book, “Counseling and Psychotherapy” (1942). Coaching also stems from later incarnations of therapies ranging from:
gestalt (“here and now”*),
cognitive-behavioral (“mindset”*),
solutions-focused (“outcomes”*),
jungian or mindfulness-based (“spiritual entrepreneurs”*),
family and group dynamics (“a-la Tony Robbins”*)
narrative (“branding and Instagram stories”*),
and acceptance and commitment therapy (“values”*).
*The terms in quotes are the newer names for what resemble concepts from traditional therapy theories.
Due to our extensive experience working with thousands of clients, with dozens of modalities, and in many settings, coaching is simply a natural extension of who therapists already are. Adding another hat, is just par for the course.
That’s why, whether my fellow licensed colleagues choose to coach, consult, provide therapy; or prefer to use coaching as one of hundreds of modalities that we have in our toolbox – I trust that we have the expert skills to help our clients “thrive” in their career and relationships. In me, you’ll find a cheerleader for clinicians who are choosing to learn, embrace, and ride the waves of the online entrepreneur world in whatever way they choose.
